Razzle Dazzle Ideas for Math

 

Pretzel Numbers and Shapes

Skills: numerals; shapes; problem solving
Materials: pretzel sticks, pretzel twists, sandwich bags, napkins
Directions: Place several pretzel sticks and twists in sandwich bags for each child ahead of time. Children take their pretzels and see how many numerals and shapes they can make by breaking or nibbling the pretzels
More! Use pretzels to make alphabet letters or to write words. Divide children into pairs and let them take turns making numerals or shapes and identifying what their friend makes.
 

Fill It Up

Skills: one-to-one correspondence; numeral recognition
Materials: ice cube tray, dice, cotton balls
Directions: Children take an ice cube tray, one die, and a handful of cotton balls. Next, they roll the die and count out that number of cotton balls. Then they put the cotton balls in the containers in their ice cube tray.
More! This can easily be played as a game with two or more students. The first one to fill her tray wins. Use muffin pans and tennis balls, egg cartons and plastic eggs, etc.

French Fries

Skills: sets; numerals; addition; place value
Materials: yellow kitchen sponges, French fry containers or paper cups, marker
Directions: Cut sponges into ½” strips to resemble French fries. Write numerals 0-10 on the cups or containers as shown. Children make appropriate sets of French fries in the containers.
More! Children roll 2 dice and place that amount of French fries in the container. How many altogether?
Write number words on the cartons.
Use for place value.

Spill the Beans

Skills: counting; sets; fact families
Materials: large dry lima beans, permanent marker, breath mint tin
Directions: Color one side of the beans with a permanent marker. (You can also spread the beans on a newspaper and spray paint one side.) Have children place a certain amount of beans (such as five) in the tin. Children shake them up and then open the lid. How many colored beans? How many white beans? How many in all? Close the lid and shake again. How many of each? Continue shaking and counting the beans
More! Have children write down the number sentence each time they shake up the beans.

Show Me the Money

Skills: money recognition; counting
Materials: coin purse, real or pretend coins, paper, old peeled crayons
Directions: Have children sort the coins that are alike. Can they name the coins? Can they tell the value? Can they count the coins? Place the paper on top of the coins and rub with the side of the crayon. Describe the image that appears.
More! Take a file folder and divide it into 8 sections as shown. Cut a toy or other object out of a magazine and write a price by each one. Children count out the appropriate number of coins for each object.
