Razzle Dazzle Ideas for Math

 

Count at School Book

Skills: counting; numerals
Materials: construction paper cut in 8” squares, school supply catalog, laminating machine, Vis-à-vis marker, hole punch, book rings
Directions: Cut common classroom objects out of the school supply catalog, such as tables, dolls, easels, chairs, etc. Glue one on each page and place a blank line on the bottom as shown. Laminate the pages and bind with book rings. Children take the book and walk around the room, count the objects, and write their answer on the line with the erasable marker. After they have finished, they erase their answers with a paper towel.
More! Encourage children to tally when they count large amounts, such as books and chairs.

Pocket Book

Skills: sets; counting; sorting; money; addition
Materials: five pencil pockets, book rings, small counting toys, coins, poker chips, sticky labels
Directions: Attach the pencil pockets together with the book rings to make a book. Put a label at the top of each bag as shown. Write numerals or number words on the labels. Children make the appropriate set in the pencil pocket and then zip it shut.

Children can sort small, flat objects (crayons, pencils, erasers, colored toothpicks, buttons, etc.) in the bags. Write cents on the labels and have children count out the appropriate coins.
Write addition facts on the labels. Provide children with two different types of counters so they can make sets and put them together in the pocket.

Eating Math

Skills: counting; sorting; estimating; patterning
Materials: colorful cereal, crackers, or snack mix, zip snack bags, napkins
Directions: Fill each bag with ½ cup of cereal. Have children do some of the activities below with the cereal in their bag:
      • Estimation- How many pieces are in your bag?
      • Counting- Count and see how many you have.
         Did you estimate more or less? Is it an odd
         or even number?
      • Sorting- Sort the cereal by color, shape, or size.
      • Patterning- Can you make a pattern with your cereal?

Remind children to wash their hands!
