Math Line-Up

A Pringle’s can or icing can and poker chips are all you’ll need to make this game.  Write the numerals 1-25 (or however many children there are in your room) on the chips.  Cut a 2”x ½” slit in the lid and insert the chips inside.  When it’s time to line up, pass the can around and have each child select a chip.  The person with “1” on their chip lines up, followed by the child with “2,” and so on.  (The child with “1” could collect the chips as the other children line up.)

- To vary this, line up by odd numbers, then even numbers.

- Call out math problems and the child with the answer lines up.

Hint!  Write number words on the back of the chips.

Phone Book

Cut the front and back off an old phone book for your community.  Give each child a sheet of paper and ask them to draw their picture and write their phone number on it.  Put their pages in the book in alphabetical order.  Let children practice calling their friends with a old cell phone.  Children could also write down their friends’ numbers.

Hint!  If their phone number is unlisted, use the school phone number so they don’t feel left out.

Make this a teachable moment by discussing telephone etiquette.

Number Hunt

For homework, send children on a “number hunt.”  Have them make a list (or draw pictures) of everything in their house that has a number on it.  This will certainly increase their awareness of how we use math in the home.
