Odd and Even  (“Totally Math” CD)

Here’s a fun new dance called the number bop;
Tap left and right, but please don’t stop.

If a number’s odd we’ll tap to the left.
And if it’s even we’ll tap to the right.

If a number ends in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9
It’s got to be odd, all the time.

But if it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8,
Then you know it’s even, at any rate.

Number 1 is odd so tap to the left,
Two is even so tap to the right.

3 tap left…4 tap right…etc.

Now you’ve learned a dance called the number bop
With even and odd numbers that never stop!

Activities:  Have children sort odd and even numbers using a T-chart.

Slap thighs on odd numbers and clap hands on even numbers.

Expanded Notation

Have children listen as you snap for tens and clap the ones.  For example:  “Snap, snap, snap, clap” = 31.  Add hundreds by stomping your feet, thousands by jumping, and so on.

Numbo

Draw the face of a worm (Numbo) on a circle or paper plate.  Cut 10-15 circles out of construction paper and number 1-10 or 1-25.  Pass the circles out to the children.  Place Numbo’s head on the floor and ask the children to help him grow.  The child with “1” puts her circle down, followed by “2,” “3,” etc.  Ask questions, such as:  “What number comes between 7 and 9?  What comes before 13?  What is 2 more than 4?
