Cartoon Frames

Skills: interest in writing; sequence
Materials: copies of cartoon frames (make your own or use the one you can download), pencils, colored pencils, pens. Check the Downloads link at the left.
Directions: Begin by offering children cartoon frames with 2 sections. Ask them to think of a story and draw the beginning and end of it. Next, give them 3 frames for drawing the beginning, middle and end. Finally, offer frames with 2, 3, and 4 sections.
More! Explain how cartoonists use “bubbles” to let you know what the characters are saying. Encourage the children to add dialogue bubbles to their cartoons.
 

Picture Talks

Skills: descriptive writing
Materials: magazines, paper, pencil, scissors, glue
Directions: Each child takes a section of the newspaper and highlights ten words (or letters) they can read. Next, ask them to write the words (or letters) on a sheet of paper.
More! Write what you could see, hear, smell, taste, or touch in the picture. Ask children to write what the people in the picture are saying.
 

In The News

Skills: high frequency words; letter recognition; writing
Materials: newspaper, highlighter, paper, pencils
Directions: Write lowercase letters on puzzle pieces and corresponding uppercase letters on the matching part of the frame. Children match letters to complete the puzzle.

Have them make a collage of words they can read from a grocery store sales flyer.

 

Rainbow Writing

Skills: high frequency words; writing
Materials: paper, crayons, colored markers, colored pencils
Directions: Write high frequency words on the paper with a marker. (Use large print.) Children take the colored markers and crayons and trace around the outside of the words with different colors to create a “rainbow.”
 

Write and Wipe

Skills: writing letters; words; numerals
Materials: small wipe-off board or white plastic plate, dry erase marker, old sock, index cards
Directions: Write letters, words, or whatever skill you want to reinforce on the index cards. Children choose cards and practice writing the information on the wipe-off board.
Hint!

You can make inexpensive wipe-off boards by purchasing shower board at a building supply store. Ask them (nicely) and they will cut it into individual sections for you.

 

Secret Message

Skills: motivation to write and read
Materials: paper, white crayon, water soluble markers
Directions: Write “secret messages” or special words on the paper with the white crayon. Children choose a paper and color over it with a marker. The crayon will resist the color and the message will appear. Can they read the message?

Let children write secret messages or draw pictures with a white crayon. Exchange papers with a friend and color over the entire page with a marker.
