14. Word Man (Tune; I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly) - Write words on index cards and hold up as you sing: I know an old man, who swallowed a word. What would he say if he swallowed this word? (Kids read word.) That’s absurd! (Make crazy signals with hands.)
15. First Thing on Your Paper (Tune: If You’re Happy) - The first thing on your paper is your name. The first thing on your paper is your name. The teacher needs to know who did this work and so… The first thing on your paper is your name. *You could add another verse, “The second thing on your paper is the date…”
16. Sound Sack (Tune: I’m a Little Teapot) - What’s in the sound sack, who can tell? Maybe it’s a book or maybe it’s a shell? What’s in the sound sack, who can say? Blend the sounds you’ll know right away. (Put several objects in a bag and stretch out the sounds. As children blend the sounds pull the object from the bag. Children must again segment the sounds be fore you put the objects back in the bag.)
17. Cheers and Goals - Before conference time children draw (or write) three things they have accomplished and want to “cheer” about. Children also list three things they are working on (goals).
18. Turn on your brains! - Help children focus and get ready to learn by turning on their brains each morning: Turn on the right side of your brain. Turn on the left side. Turn on your right eye. Turn on your left eye. Turn on your right ear. Turn on your left ear. You don’t need to turn on your mouth because it’s always “on.” Now you’re ready to learn!
19. Roller Coaster Days - Say the days of the week like the roller coaster cheer. Put your hands down low as you say, “Monday, Tuesday…” Move your hands up a little for each day until you come to the current day and go, “Whooo!” Lower your voice as you say the rest of the days in the week.
20. Thumbs Up Thinking - Tell the children to put their thumb next to their chest if they know the answer to a question. They can put up additional fingers if they know more than one answer.
