Shine On!


WHY? high frequency words, tracking
WHAT? flashlight
HOW? Turn off the lights in the classroom and sing the song below to the tune of
" Shine on Harvest Moon."

Shine on, shine on the word (sing a word on the word wall)
and make it glow.
Shine on (word),
it's a word that you should know.

Pass the flashlight to a child and have them shine the light
on the word. Continue singing other words for the children to
identify. You could also let the children take turns singing words
and passing the flashlight to their friends.
 
More? Use the flashlight to track print and read other words in the classroom.

Play, "I spy something that begins with (letter)." Have children take the
flashlight and shine it on objects that begin with tat sound.

Sing the words below to the tune of "Do You Know the Muffin Man?"
Insert letters, words, colors, or shapes in the song. Children take the
flashlight and shine it on the correct symbol.

Do you see the word (name a word),
the word ______, the word ______?
Do you see the word _______
somewhere in the room?

The child takes the flashlight and responds as they spotlight the word:

Yes, I see the word ______,
the word _____, the word _____.
Yes, I see the word ______
somewhere in the room.

One other tune you can use with flashlights is "This Little Light of Mine."

This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine.
