A Poem
A poem, a poem
Is a very special thing.
It takes the words
And makes them sing.
A poem is a present,
A poem is a treat
With words piled like ice-cream
In your bowl to eat!
A poem, a poem
Is a treasure and an art
So always carry one
With you in your heart.
Playing Outside
My favorite time is playing outside.
The grass is green and the sky is wide.
I jump like a frog jumps all around
And feel my feet land on the ground.
I run like a racehorse super fast
As the trees and clouds and people whiz past.
I reach my hands up oh so high
And flap my arms like a bird in the sky.
Then I skip like a rabbit—hip, hip, hop!
Up in the air and down I drop.
Sometimes my friends come out to play—
Those are my very favorite days—
We play games like hide and seek.
I wish that we could play all week!
On the Playground
I love the playground—
I feel so free
To run around
Between the trees.
I can dance
And I can shout
I can prance
And jump about
I can swing
The whole long day.
My feet touch the sky—
Up, up, away!
I can spin
On the merry-go-round
Until I’m dizzy,
Then slow me down.
I can cross
The monkey bars
Like an astronaut
From star to star.
I can climb—
I never stop!—
Like a mountain lion
Straight to the top!
We Are Wonderful!
(Echo chant)
We are wonderful, yes we are!
We are wonderful, yes we are!
We are a class of superstars!
We are a class of superstars!
We are smart and we are brave
We are smart and we are brave
And we know how to behave!
And we know how to behave!
Some of us are short and some are tall,

But all of us are neat and cool
But all of us are neat and cool
And we have a good time in our school!
And we have a good time in our school!
Knock! Knock!
(Children answer the “knock-knock” in the voice of the character or animal.)
Knock! Knock! Who’s there?

Knock! Knock! Guess who?
Opera singer—la da de do!
Knock! Knock! Who is that?
Purr, purr, my big fat cat!
Knock! Knock! Guess who?
Mr. Robot—Hello. How are you?
Knock! Knock! Who can it be?
A librarian—shhh! Quiet please!

GRRRRRR!
Peanut Butter Is one of my favorite foods.
It puts me in a nutty mood.
In a sandwich, or spread on toast that’s hot
It makes my tummy say, “Thanks a lot!”
I don’t want hamburgers
Or macaroni and cheese
I don’t want popcorn
Or bananas from the trees.
Not bologna, pizza, or pickles,
Not a soda pop that fizzes and tickles.
I don’t need a lot of fancy clutter,
Just some plain old yummy peanut butter!
Ode to Broccoli Broccoli! Broccoli!
Shaped like little trees.
Piping hot with butter!
Piping hot with cheese!
Do you like it steamed
Or boiled or baked or fried?
I like it raw and crisp
With dressing on the side.
I like it in the summer,
Winter, fall, and spring
In tiny bits or great big chunks
Or somewhere in between.
Broccoli! Broccoli!
How I love it so!
I swallow it down bite by bite
And look – straight up I grow!
Candy Lollipops and bubble gum,
Candy canes and sugar plums,
Lemon, grape, or sour cherry
Watermelon or pink strawberry,
Chocolate, orange, cinnamon—
I will eat them one by one!
On a stick or in a dish
Sugar sweet is what I wish!
Silly Nursery Rhymes Baa-baa black sheep shaved his hair
And went to school in his underwear!
Little Miss Muffet all prim and pink
Took a bath in the kitchen sink!
Jack and Jill bought safety hats
And joined the circus as acrobats!
Three blind mice ran up and down the clock
And all went home with holes in their socks!
Old Mother Hubbard was such a hog
That she ate everything except her dog!
Jack-Be-Nimble saw a rat
And jumped up and down like a scaredy cat!
Little Bo Peep saw Jack dance
And laughed so hard she split her pants!
Little Jack Horner ate pie until dawn
And went to bed with his tennis shoes on!
Hey-diddle-diddle, wasn’t that fun?
Silly nursery rhymes—can you think of one?
The Hungry Fish I bought a little fish
And I brought him home
In a silver dish
Filled with silver foam.
He was so very tiny.
He was so very small.
He didn’t have a hiney—
He was hardly there at all.
So I fed him a tomato
And I fed him some green peas
And I fed him a potato
And some broccoli with cheese.
Then he ate a large smoked ham
And some chocolate pudding too
And he ate a leg of lamb
And he grew and grew and grew.
He was too big for his dish.
He was too big for the sink.
He was too big for the bathtub!
I really had to think.
I drove him to the ocean
And I drove him to the bay
And in one great giant motion
He swam far, far away.
The Bug Dance
(Echo Poem)
Bugs, bugs everywhere!
Bugs, bugs everywhere!
On my shoulders, in my hair!
On my shoulders, in my hair!
Fat and lean ones, in-between ones
Fat and lean ones, in-between ones
Orange ones, red ones, pink and green ones!
Orange ones, red ones, pink and green ones!
Crickets, beetles, ladybugs too—
Crickets, beetles, ladybugs too—
One just landed on my shoe!
One just landed on my shoe!
Caterpillars, grasshoppers, spiders, ants
Caterpillars, grasshoppers, spiders, ants
One is crawling up my pants!
One is crawling up my pants!
I like bugs both big and small.
I like bugs both big and small.
I like them marching up the wall.
I like them marching up the wall.
I like them on flowers and in trees,
I like them on flowers and in trees,
But please, oh please, get them off of me!
But please, oh please, get them off of me!
The Man in the Moon Do you see the moon
Way up in the sky?
That’s where I would go
If I could learn to fly.
Or maybe we could sail there
Over starry seas
In a little boat
Made for you and me.
When we finally got there
We’d meet the careful man
Who lives there every day
And does all that he can.
To keep the moon as clean
And shiny as can be.
He’d come out to greet us
And ask us in for tea.
We all would share a moon pie
And cookies made of stars
And we’d look back on earth
So very, very far.
And suddenly we’d miss
Our planet, round and blue.
We’d get back in our boat
And sail home, me and you.
My Pets My kitty’s name is Myrtle.
She isn’t very big.
She’s taller than my turtle
But shorter than my pig.
I also have a frog
I found outside my house,
A hamster and a dog
And a tiny pink-nosed mouse.
My jellyfish is slimy,
My mammoth has long hair.
My porcupine is spiny—
She cuddles with my bear.
They sleep in bed with me,
Every single one—
The whole menagerie.
I know it sounds like fun,
But the problem is, you see,
In my little bed
There is no room for me.
I sleep on the floor instead.
The Letter Walk
A was walking down the street
And ran into her good friend B.
B said, “Won’t you come with me?
“I’m going to look for our friend C.”
So A joined B to go find C
And on their way they saw friend D
Playing ball with E, F, and G,
But none of them had seen C.
“Look,” said B to his friend A—
“Here come H, I, J and K.”
K was sad because L and M
Had a party and didn’t invite him.
“That’s okay,” said N and O.
“We’ll have a party of our own
“And we’ll invite P and Q
“And R and S and T and U.”
“That sounds great!” said A and B.
“But does anyone know what happened to C?”
Just then they saw V and W
And X and Y were with them, too.
But not one of them had seen C.
B said to A, “Let’s go ask Z.”
They found Z reading under a tree
And asked him if he knew about C.
But before Z could speak his mind
C came running up behind.
“Stop!” she cried. “Wait up for me!
“C always follows A and B!”
Then they got together like letters do
To make some words and sentences too!
