Once upon a time there was a little old woman who lived way, way up in the mountains. One day she put on her hat, got her basket, and started off to town. (Put on the hat, hook the basket over your arm, and start to walk around the room. Pretend to talk to the different characters as you tell the story.)
First the little old woman ran into the dog, and the dog asked, “Little old woman, where are you going on such a fine day?”
“I’m going down, down to town,” she replied.
“What are you going to get?” asked the dog.
“You’ll just have to wait and see,” she answered.
Next she came to a rabbit and he said, “Little old woman, where are you going on such a fine day?”
“I’m going down, down to town,” she replied.
“What are you going to get?” asked the rabbit.
“You’ll just have to wait and see,” she answered.
Then she came to a horse and he said, “Little old woman, where are you going on such a fine day?”
“I’m going down, down to town,” she replied.
“What are you going to get?” asked the horse.
“You’ll just have to wait and see,” she answered.
Finally she came to some children and they asked, “Little old woman, where are you going on such a fine day?”
“I’m going down, down to town,” she replied.
“What are you going to get?” asked the children.
“You’ll just have to wait and see,” she answered.
The little old woman went on down the road and later she returned with a basket full of goodies. All the animals and children ran up to her and asked, “What do you have? Is there something for me?”
The woman took out a bone and said, “Here, dog, this is for you.” And to the rabbit she gave a carrot, and to the horse she gave the corn. Then she said, “And here is a special surprise for all you boys and girls!” (At this point you give each child their special treat!)
