Classroom Management Tips -
I’M WATCHING YOU!
This is a quiet signal to a child who tends to misbehave. Make a “V” with your index and middle finger and place it by your eyes and then point at the child as you make eye contact.
SMILE IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWER –
Give children extra time to think of answers to questions by telling them to “smile” when they know the answer. You’ll have lots of happy faces in your room and discourage the same children from shouting out the answer all the time.
I’LL PASS -
Teach children to say “I’ll pass…” when they don’t know the answer.
SPIES AND INVISIBLE CLOAKS –
Let children pretend to be spies when you go down the hall. They can also put on an invisible cloak like Harry Potter.
TELL TEDDY -
Choose a stuffed bear or other animal to listen to children’s complaints and tattles. If a child comes up to tattle, simply say, “Go tell Teddy!”
OREO FOR TATTLING –
When a child comes to you to tattle, have him hold out one hand and say something good about the friend. Next, he pretends to spread on the icing as he makes the negative comment. Finally, he puts the top on the cookie and makes another positive comment about the friend.
EASY BUTTON –
An “Easy Button” from Staples is great for beginning readers because it gives them confidence to think that reading is easy.
