Nursery Rhyme Games

Games - Adapt nursery rhyme concepts to games children enjoy playing.
  • For “Little Miss Muffet” use a plastic spider to play a game similar to “Tisket a Tasket.”
  • Patty cake with a partner for “Pat a Cake.”
  • Let each child take off a shoe and hide it around the room for “Diddle Diddle Dumpling.”
  • Increase the height of a jump rope as children try to jump over it for “Jack Be Nimble.”
  • Create your own nursery rhyme Olympics by tying in large motor skills to nursery rhymes.
For example: jumping for Jack Be Nimble, doing an obstacle course for Mary’s lamb, skipping with a partner for Jack and Jill, galloping for Ride a Cock Horse, balancing on a foot for Humpty Dumpty, and so forth.

Take Home Book - Make a copy of the attached nursery rhyme book for each child. Cut the pages apart and put them together to make a book. Practice reading the rhyme on one page each day with your children. After reading the rhyme, have children illustrate it. Let children use their imaginations and draw whatever the rhyme means to them. When you’ve completed the book, send it home for children to share with their families.
