Reading Clothes

Ask children to look at their clothes.  Are they wearing any words?

Can they read the words on their T-shirts, shoes, labels, etc? 

Make a list of all the words they are wearing on the chalk board.

Dismiss children by having each one come to the board and read one of the words.

Hint!  Let children write the words they are wearing on the board.

Are they wearing any numbers?  What are they? 

Group Story

Begin a story, and then go around the room and let each child add a sentence to the story.

Here are a few story starters:

• Once I found a pot of gold and…
• One day my dog started to talk and…
• A giant came to my door and…
• I found a hole that went down in the ground…
• I woke up one morning and I could fly…
• I visited Candy Land and…
• Tie in with a unit of study or holiday.

Hint! Pass around a play microphone or stuffed animal as you tell the story. You can also take a ball of yarn and roll it around as you “spin” a story.

Magnetic Letter Magic

With an inexpensive set of magnetic letters you can reinforce almost anything!

• Letter Bag – Place magnetic letters in a paper bag. Pass the bag around the room and have each child select a letter. Can they match their letter to classroom print? Can they match their letter to something that begins with that sound?
• Letter Pick Up – Have children close their eyes as you hide the letters around the room in plain sight. Children open their eyes and “hunt” for the letters. Can they name the letters that they find? Can they put their letters together with a friend’s letters to make a word?
• Overhead – Invite children to make words on the overhead with magnetic letters.

Sing this song to the tune of “Do You Know the Muffin Man?”

Do you see the color name color,

Do you see the color name color?
Somewhere in the room?

Let one child take a ruler or pointer and touch something in the room as they sing in response:

Yes, I see the color name color,
The color name color, the color name color.
Yes, I see the color name color,
Here in our room.
