The Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices worked with representatives from participating states with a wide range of educators, content experts, researchers, national organizations and community groups. The standards represent a set of expectations for student knowledge and skills that high school graduates need to master to succeed in college and careers. Consistent standards will provide appropriate benchmarks for all students, regardless of where they live.
The K-12 Standards:
The language strands for K-5 are Reading (Literature, Information Text, Foundational Skills), Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language.
Math standards include Counting & Cardinality, Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations in Base Ten, Measurement & Data, and Geometry.
August, 2012, focused on Reading – Literature, Information Text, and Foundational Skills.
September, 2012, offers activities for Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language.
October, 2012, will give hands-on activities for developing Math standards.
*Although kindergarten standards will be presented, these ideas can be adapted for different age levels and content.
Note! Although I’ll be focusing on kindergarten standards, the ideas and activities can easily be adapted for all primary grades. This month I will address Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language. October will highlight Mathematical Practices.
