Kangaroos and Witch's Stew

As a child, Halloween was one of my favorite times of the year. Dressing up, pretending, eating candy - what fun! I realize that many people no longer celebrate Halloween, so this month I'm giving you two choices. For those of you who like "tricks and treats," you'll find some great songs, stories, and activities. For those of you who don't, I've included some wonderful ideas teachers shared with me when I visited Australia last summer. Happy October!

AUSTRALIAN ANIMAL SONG
(Tune: "A Rum Sum Sum") Note: Before singing this song with the children, show them where Australia is located on a globe. Explain what a kangaroo, frill neck lizard (lizard whose neck comes up like a big collar when frightened), and cockatoo (nicknamed "cocky") are.

Kangaroo,
Kangaroo,
Frill neck lizard
And a kangaroo
Kangaroo,
Kangaroo,
Frill neck lizard
And a kangaroo.
A cocky,
A cocky,
Frill neck lizard and a kangaroo.
A cocky, a cocky,
Frill neck lizard and a kangaroo.

(Every time you sing "kangaroo," hold hands in front of you like paws.)

(Open palms around your face when you sing "frill neck lizard.")

(When you sing "cocky" put your open palm up on top of head like a crest.)

Adaptations: Sing loud, soft, fast slow. Hum song and make motions for the animals.

FAIRY BREAD
This is a favorite snack of Australian children. They'll often have it for celebrations instead of cupcakes. Itıs simple enough the children can prepare it all by themselves!

You will need:

  • loaf of bread
  • softened margarine or butter
  • sugar sprinkles (called 100's and 1000's in Australia)

Spread margarine or butter on the bread. Sprinkle on colored sugar. Cut diagonally into four little triangles.

The "Land Down Under" is so AMAZING! If you can't go there in person, take a trip via the internet! Your children will love learning more about Australia, too! Or, click here for some kangaroo photos.
